Solo Cantata (for bass) for the Feast of Purification of Mary - 2nd of february
This cantata is based on the story of Simeon and his “Nunc dimittis” - the Canticle of Simeon. When he saw and held the baby Jesus in his arms in the Jerusalem temple, Simeon found peace and can die peacefully.
Bach performed this cantata several times in Leipzig. The score is based on the facsimile of the 4th performance (around 1746/47). In this version the 3rd movement the first violin ist doubled by an oboe da caccia.
