BWV 94 Was frag ich nach der Welt

Chorale cantata for the 9th Sunday after Trinity

Complete score
Oboe d’amore 1
Oboe d’amore 2
Continuo

Bach performed this chorale cantata on 6th of August 1724 in Leipzig. It belongs to his 2nd cycle of Leipzig cantatas where mostly all are based on a church chorale. The gospel is on Luke 16, the parable of the Unjust Steward.

The 18th century chorale books placed the song “Was frag ich nach der Welt” in the chapter named “Von der Welt Eitelkeit und menschlicher Mühseligkeit” (“From the world vanity and human toil”) and link it to its origin, Psalm 73, 25-26:

Luther 1912
25. Wenn ich nur dich habe, so frage ich nichts nach Himmel und Erde.
26. Wenn mir gleich Leib und Seele verschmachtet, so bist du doch, Gott, allezeit meines Herzens Trost und mein Teil.

King James
25. Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.
26. My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.

The 3rd movement is a wonderful chorale and recitativo for tenor, two oboi d’amore and basso continuo. Its text has a reference to 3rd verse of the chorale “Was frag ich nach der Welt” from Balthasar Kindermann:

Die Welt sucht Ehr’ und Ruhm
Bei hocherhabnen Leuten
Und denkt nicht einmal dran,
Wie bald doch diese gleiten;
Das aber, was mein Herz
Vor andern rühmlich hält,
Ist Jesus nur allein;
Was frag’ ich nach der Welt!

The last aria reflects on the morale of the gospel text:

Er halt es mit der blinden Welt,
wer nichts auf seine Seele hält,
mir ekelt vor der Erden. Ich will nur meinen Jesum lieben
und mich in Buß und Glauben üben,
so kann ich reich und selig werden.

An interesting detail is the oboe instrumentation. The opening chorus is for two regular oboes, the other movements are undercutting the extent of the baroque oboe in the obligato arioso parts of the the 3rd movement. However, the autograph scores mention oboe d’amore just in the 7th movement, an aria for soprano, oboe d’amore and basso continuo.

I suggest to play even the 3rd movement with two oboi d’amore.

The score is based on the autograph full score and parts.

Epistle: 1 Corinthians 10, 6-13
Gospel: Luke 16, 1-9
