This cantata is without doubt a treasure for every oboe player. Its first movement, a wonderful sinfonia (probably from a lost concerto for 2 oboes, basson and strings), shows Bachs mastership in an exemplary way: just scales and arpeggios, resulting in the most beautiful and swinging music - simplicity in its best form!
The instrumentation uses the french woodwind trio: two oboes and one basson (as in the C-major suite).
The 3rd movement is another jewel - the pastoral atmosphere is drawn with two obligato oboes, a basson obligato, strings and alto.
The chorale is very famous from Bachs hands: “Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich”.
Epistle: 1 John 5, 4-10
Gospel: John 20, 19-31
