The cantata „Es ist ein trotzig und verzagt Ding“ was composed for the Trinity Sunday. Bach performed it on 27th of May 1725, finishing his second year in Leipzig. During his second year Bach wrote a cycle of so called chorale cantatas, however BWV 176 is not a chorale cantata - after eastern 1725 Bachs switched away from chorale songs as librettos. The librettist for this cantata is Christiana Mariana von Ziegler. She wrote the libretti for nine of Bachs cantatas. The score has the fifth movement, an aria for alto, 2 oboes, oboe da caccia and basso continuo. All the oboes are written in unisono. The score is based on Bachs autograph.

Epistle: Romans 11, 33-36
Gospel: John 3, 1-15
